In conjunction with Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2019 organised by the National Research Foundation Singapore, the Department of Chemistry hosted a panel discussion with 3 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry – Professor Aaron Ciechanover, Professor Michael Levitt, and Sir Fraser Stoddart – in NUS Faculty of Science LT27 on Wed, 23 Jan 2019. The discussion was moderated by Professor Shu Sin Chng and Prof Lay-Lay Chua, and attended by more than 350 participants from the public as well as students from secondary and tertiary education institutions. The Laureates shared their insights and perspectives on the role of basic research in shaping modern society, how their research have impacted society, and key drivers of future innovations and research directions. The panel interacted enthusiastically with the audience and taking many questions from the floor, as well as through the online Pigeonhole Questionaire platform. Ms Tejasvene Ramesh, Year 4 student from Department of Pharmacology, NUS, remarked that “…as a student, I learnt a lot about how to be scientist which was more useful than knowing just about their field of expertise. Your session has inspired many young minds and I am one of them.
