The 2024 Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award

Congratulations to Associate Professor Koh Ming Joofor winning the 2024 Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award for Creative Work. The award is an acknowledgement of his work in  developing base metal catalysis and radical chemistry for sustainable organic synthesis.  has developed directing group-free selective cross-coupling and functionalization reactions of alkenes catalyzed by complexes of earth abundant metals such as iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu).

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Centenary Prize 2024

Congratulations to Professor LIU Xiaogang. He has been honored with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Centenary Prize for his outstanding contributions to research and innovation. Prof Liu won the prize for outstanding contributions to the understanding and optical manipulation of photon conversion in nanocrystals and their applications in X-ray and light-field imaging, and for excellence in communication.

SNIC-AsCA2019 Singapore Award (Distinguished Woman Chemist Award 2024)

Congratulations to Associate Professor Chi Chunyan for winning the SNIC-AsCA2019 Singapore Award (Distinguished Woman Chemist Award 2024) for the synthesis of challenging p-conjugated structures, including fully conjugated carbon nanobelts, zigzag-edged nanographenes, acenes, heterocyclic quinodimethanes, and p-extended non-alternant non-benzenoid hydrocarbons, as well as for studying their properties and applications as materials.

American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows

Congratulations to Professor Liu Xiaogang for being elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows.  This honor  is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to medical and biological engineers, comprised of the top two percent of engineers in these fields.

Novartis Early Career Award in Chemistry 2023

Congratulations to Associate Professor Koh Ming Joo, the 2023 recipient of the Novartis Early Career Award in Chemistry. This is the first time, the award is given to a Singapore-based researcher for making a significant contribution to chemistry. Since 1998, the Novartis Early Career Award in Chemistry is given annually to outstanding scientists within 10 years of having established an independent academic research career in chemistry.

Welcome to Assistant Professor Wei Jiangbo

The Department of Chemistry welcomes Assistant Professor Wei Jiangbo who has joined the Department under the NUS Presidential Young Professorship scheme in November 2023. Dr Wei’s current research interests include investigating molecular mechanisms of RNA modification mediated gene and chromatin regulation, exploring the translation potential of precision medicine through RNA modifications, and developing novel biochemical tools to probe and modulate local RNA properties.

Novel catalyst for green production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals

A team of NUS researchers led by Associate Professor Lu Jiong from the Department of Chemistry under the NUS Faculty of Science, together with their international collaborators, have developed a new class of catalysts – known as heterogeneous geminal atom catalysts (GACs) – that promotes greener and more sustainable manufacturing processes for fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
