Head’s Message

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where we are committed to pursue excellence in chemical education and research!

The Department of Chemistry traces its lineage to 1929 when the Raffles College was established in Singapore. We are one of the oldest departments at NUS; meanwhile, we are also a very dynamic and rapidly growing department. NUS Chemistry is widely recognized as one of the top chemistry departments in Asia, well-reputed in a global context.

In the Department of Chemistry, we are working towards the theoretical and experimental understanding of behaviours of atoms and molecules, advancing fundamental knowledge and the forefront of chemical sciences, for the benefit of society and mankind. NUS Chemistry has a group of very talented, outstanding faculty members, renowned and well-recognized in their respective fields of research. Our faculty members are actively exploring many emerging areas in the chemical sciences, including: advanced and functional materials, catalysis and synthesis, chemical biology and biochemistry, energy and environmental chemistry, as well as sustainable chemistry, among others. I encourage you to browse the individual webpages of our faculty members, to learn about their exciting discoveries and to share the excitement of their research adventures.

In educational frontiers, NUS Chemistry is committed to provide top quality education and nurture the next generation of scholars and leaders in chemical sciences and beyond. With our dedicated and inspiring faculty members and passionate supporting staff, the Department of Chemistry is well poised to offer a range of  holistic and stimulating educational programmes to various groups of students: undergraduates, MSc students (coursework or research), PhD students, as well as adult learners. Besides our flagship undergraduate programme with Chemistry as the primary major, we also offer Chemistry as a second major under the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) programme. I invite prospective students to carefully look through our webpages, and find the academic programme that suits your need.

At NUS Chemistry, we are well-equipped with excellent modern teaching/research laboratories, along with the state-of-the-art facilities, and awe-inspiring infrastructures. All in all, the Department of Chemistry at NUS provides an outstanding environment for chemical education and research. On behalf of my colleagues in the Department, I extend my warmest welcome to prospective students, adult learners, alumni, researchers, colleagues and friends all over the world!
