Every year, shortlisted Singapore JC students undergo a special training in chemistry held by the NUS Department of Chemistry lecturers to prepare them for the very prestigious International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). The IChO brings students from all nations to various cities around the world, where they measure their chemistry knowledge and problem-solving skills against one another. Talented beyond their age, our students have brought back a trove of gold and silver medals under the banner of our beloved nation of Singapore.
The academics of the NUS Department of Chemistry extend our open arms towards first-year JC H2 students and Year 5 IP students who are seeking mentors to pursue a scientific research under the Science Research Programme (SRP) Singapore. Students may submit their SRP for assessment as a H3 subject, or simply experience the SRP just as enrichment.
Students who are keen may submit their SRP to the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF), an annual national competition organised by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and Science Centre Singapore (SCS). The SSEF is affiliated to the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which is regarded as the Olympics of science competitions.
SSEF Year | Award | |
2022 | 1 x Gold, 1 x Silver, 1 x Merit | |

Hope to hear from all of you budding researchers!
The NUS Chemistry Week is biennial festival held by the Department of Chemistry, where students and teachers of chemistry and chemical sciences are invited to join us in a series of events, workshops, and fun competitions. The festival is conducted during the school June holidays, with various activities that change every time.
Secondary school students may look forward to our prestigious Chem-dot-comm challenge, a nation-wide competition where students explore the role of chemistry in solving critical environmental and global issues, by presenting their ideas in a unique website format. If adrenaline rush is their preference, then they may opt to brave the Rapid Chem challenge, a scavenger hunt plus chemistry quiz type of competition where being fast and efficient is key. For the young scholars who want to learn from the experts, the Chem Day Camp, the Science of Cooking and Molecular Gastronomy Workshop, and the Advancing the Frontiers of Science and Technology talk may be your cup of tea.
JC students may look forward to the Synthesis Workshop, where they put their practical chemistry knowledge into use and create new compounds with their own hands. JC students are also invited to join us in the Chem Day Camp, the Science of Cooking and Molecular Gastronomy Workshop, and the Advancing the Frontiers of Science and Technology talk.
Teachers who wish to sharpen and expand their craft are very welcome to join us in our Chemistry Teacher Workshop, which consists of two parts: Practical and Teaching.
Please do note that the above activities may change at every event. Registrations open approximately around new year when the event takes place. Please look forward to it! The official webpage for the NUS Chemistry Week can be found here.
