It is with profound sadness that the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore mourns the passing of our esteemed colleague and dear friend, Professor Yao Shao Qin. An outstanding scientist, dedicated educator, and generous mentor, Professor Yao made exceptional contributions to the Department, the University, and the wider scientific community. Professor Yao was internationally recognised for his pioneering research in chemical biology and chemical proteomics. Through his scientific creativity, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to research excellence, he advanced our understanding of complex biological systems and helped shape the development of these important fields. His scientific achievements have left an enduring mark on the international research community. Beyond his accomplishments as a scientist, Professor Yao was a deeply respected and valued member of our Department. He was generous in sharing his knowledge, experience, and insights, and was always willing to offer his help to colleagues. As a senior academic, he took a genuine interest in the development of younger faculty members, encouraging them to pursue ambitious research directions and to realise their full potential. Professor Yao was equally devoted to his students and postdoctoral researchers. As a mentor, he combined high expectations with patience, encouragement, and genuine care for those under his guidance. He inspired generations of young scientists not only through his passion for discovery, but also through his dedication, integrity, and belief in their abilities. The many researchers whose careers he helped nurture are an important part of his lasting legacy. Those who had the privilege of knowing Professor Yao will remember him not only for his scientific achievements, but also for his wisdom, humility, kindness, and generosity of spirit. He was a colleague who readily offered his support, a mentor who took pride in the success of others, and a friend whose warmth and sincerity touched many lives. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life dedicated to scientific discovery, education, and service to the academic community. Professor Yao’s legacy will endure through the research he pioneered, the students and colleagues he inspired, and the many lives he enriched. Professor Yao will be deeply missed by all of us in the Department of Chemistry. We will remember him with great affection, admiration, and gratitude. May he rest in peace.
